Contrary Warriors
Actor Peter Coyote narrates this excellent documentary about the Crow Indians of southeast Montana. For over 100 years, this resilient, ornery tribe has struggled against the white man's encroachment while their 38-million-acre homeland has been slowly whittled down to less than 2 million acres. The living symbol of the Crow's resistance rests on the unbendable shoulders of Robert Yellowtail, a 97 year-old contemporary warrior. Tireless and inspiring, Yellowtail started as an activist lawyer in 1910, when he successfully argued the Crows' opposition to an article of legislation in Congress. Yellowtail recounts his century-long battle with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, white ranchers, Christian missionaries and corporations in search of cheap natural resources. Contrary Warriors also pays considerable attention to the delicate balance between the Crows' heritage and the demands of the dominant culture.
