Produced at the Edison Studios, John Collins' The Cossack Whip stars Viola Dana in a melodramatic story about brute oppression in Czarist Russia. Collins managed to create authentic-looking sets and to compose striking imagery in wintry Eastern snowscapes; he also introduced several perversely sado-masochistic sequences involving villain-whipping-victim and vice versa! Quite a revelation.
