Crazy

One of Europe's smallest countries, the Netherlands, has consistently provided soldiers for U.N. peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. Probing interviews with nine Dutch veterans of Korea, Lebanon, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bosnia illustrate that neutrality certainly does not mean indifference and that the emotional scars of war are not limited to the combatants. When the vets have difficulty describing what they've seen or expressing their emotions, veteran documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann simply films them listening to the tune that they associate most vividly with the tour of duty, from Puccini's Turandot to Seal's "Crazy." Music accesses an emotional domain in which suppressed pain becomes palpable.
