The Cremator (Spalovac Mrtvol)

"A parable on the events in the Thirties leading up to the Nazi occupation of Prague, The Cremator is a somber essay based on a novella by Ladislav Fuks. It should delight necrophiliacs and disturb everyone else. The central character, a conscientious crematorium employee, is converted to Nazism, and becomes manager of the establishment when his predecessor is arrested by the Gestapo. He is chosen to work in the huge new furnaces where he can "liberate thousands of souls into the ether in one burning." This is Herz' third feature, following The Sign of Cancer and The Lame Devil. By concentrating almost exclusively on images of death, and by infecting us with the cremator's loving concern for his career, Herz builds up a persuasive allegory which must be intended to remind his country 'never to forget.'
