Cuba
Richard Lester takes us on a trip back in time to Havana on the eve of revolution, when it is still a corrupt American playground-one in which the U.S. government still hopes to play. To this end, British mercenary Sean Connery is sent down to diffuse the revolution. Since the outcome of that story is no mystery, Lester concentrates on a striking portrait of the aging hero himself. A Casablanca-like love story develops in which Connery re-connects with a lover from his distant past (Brooke Adams, who couldn't have aged much, but is now the wife of a Cuban industrialist); their relationship is pitted against their involvement in the political upheaval surrounding them. Cuba is fun to watch for a (movie) view of pre-Castro Cuba, with its vivid contrasts and now almost mythical vulgarity. And Connery is at his thoughtful best in analyzing his own heroic roles of yesteryear.
