César

The culminatingfilm in Marcel Pagnol's trilogy-Marius, Fanny and César, knowncollectively as The Fanny Trilogy-can be fully appreciated by those who missedthe first two parts. The story picks up after a twenty-year jump: Fanny (OraneDemazis) is now married to an aging Panisse (Charpin), with a grown son who doesnot yet know that his real father is Marius (Pierre Fresnay), who left Fanny fora life of seafaring adventure. The one who knows all and provides the film withits richest illumination is César (Raimu), patriarch of Pagnol'sProvençal gallery of all-too-human types.
