Dance Black America

Documentary filmmakers Chris Hegedus and D. A. Pennebaker (Don't Look Back) have captured on film highlights of what must have been an incredible experience, the four-day “Dance Black America” festival held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in April 1983. Narrated by Geoffrey Holder, Dance Black America brings to the screen the best of black dance through the years, both concert dance by leading black choreographers, and the street and social dance that traces its roots to Africa. Performances are by: The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (with Donna Wood, Gary DeLoatch), Garth Fagan's Bucket Dance Theater, Mama Lu Park's Jazz Dancers, The Charles Moore Dance Theater, The Chuck Davis Dance Co., Eleo Pomare, Chuck Green, The Magnificent Force, The Jazzy Jumpers, Al Perryman, Leon Jackson, Halifu Osumare, Dejan's Olympia Brass Band of New Orleans, Rudy Stevenson Band, Ruth Brisbane, and BISS Harmonizers.
