Dangerous to Know

Robert Florey, born in France, worked in Hollywood from 1921; in addition to his “A” films--Hollywood Boulevard, Cocoanuts and co-directing Monsieur Verdoux with Chaplin--he was a great enthusiast of the American cinema and brought this spirit to “B” films too numerous to mention. Dangerous to Know was, typically of the “B” picture, too quickly dismissed by critics at the time of its release. It contains a number of interesting twists and draws on the strange qualities of actor Akim Tamiroff to create its lead character, a classical music aficionado who is also the kingpin of a murderous racket. While he rhapsodizes over the “Three Bs,” his henchmen perform the dirty deeds he has orchestrated. He yearns for a society woman (Gail Patrick), but in the meantime seeks solace in the comforting ways of his Asian mistress, played by Anna May Wong. One of the most curious scenes in gangster films has to be that in which she commits hara kiri to the strains of Tchaikovsky.
