Dark Hair
Women's hair as myth and metaphor: Kurisaki uses Kabuki theater, documentary interviews, narrative re-enactments and bunraku puppets to explore the mystical and symbolic properties of the typically long, dark hair of Japanese women. She notes, "In any country, women's hair has been loved as the symbol of feminine beauty, pride, sentiment and pleasure... In Japan, it is said that hair is life to a woman. It describes the history of women's hearts and sentiments. Since prehistoric times, stories of beautiful, dark hair figure prominently in historical events... In this film I have tried to describe the nobility, delicacy, beauty and elegance which characterize Japanese women."
