Days of Youth (Wakaki hi) preceded by David Bordwell Lecture

David Bordwell will provide English narration for Days of Youth, the earliest extant Ozu film. One of several Ozu satires on college life, Days of Youth is set partly at a ski resort, where two college roommates vie over the same girl and fail on two counts: to win her, and to pass the exams for which they have not studied. The film's comic touches are typified by the opening ploy, described by David Owens (Japan Society): "Watanabe, a student, hangs out a 'Room to Let' sign in front of his boarding house and then rents out his own room to a pretty girl who inquires, forcing him to find other lodgings. He leaves something behind to give him the pretext for returning and getting to know the girl..."

David Bordwell teaches film theory and history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. (See his article on Ozu, Page 12).
