Demon of the Derby: The Ann Calvello Story
Director Sharon Rutter and Producer Christine Murray in Person, with Special Guest Ann Calvello and Other Roller Derby Greats!
The oval track was a thing of beauty. Helmeted skaters in full-flung fury whipped around the banks, clipping and clawing their opponents until one by one they fell, leaving the teams like debris strewn around the wooden course. Not to be limited by gravity, Roller Derby upped the Gs with guerrilla antics, grudge matches, and the dread penalty box. No one spent more time in the box than Ann Calvello, "The Meanest Mama on Skates." Joining the Roller Derby circuit in the late forties, "Banana Nose" Calvello elbowed feminine friendliness aside and became an outrageous hellraiser, baiting the audience, facing off with refs, trading taunts with her archrival Joanie Weston, "The Blonde Bombshell." She also kicked the kitsch factor up front, flaunting wild hairdos and frosted white lipstick. At age seventy, Calvello is a feisty Grande Dame, still capable of jammin' the rail with the best of them. Chock-full of vintage footage, Demon of the Derby grabs you by the jersey and pulls you around that raunchy rink.
