The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Luis Buñuel's account of the night-long (life-long/class-wide) attempt of six wealthy people to sit down to dinner is the comedy of manners to end all comedies of manners. Armed with la creme de la creme of European actors, Buñuel produces--in lieu of dinner--the secret ingredients of the bourgeois power base and the dream recipe for chic. Fernando Rey is a heroin magnate who moonlights as a South American diplomat. He is joined by two business colleagues, Jean-Pierre Cassel and Paul Frankeur, and their wives, Delphine Seyrig and Stephane Audran. Add little sister, Bulle Ogier, and shake. Buñuel was 72 when he made this fresh update on surrealist thought.
