Disoriented and Dislocated
Tonight we revive three films that use exquisite images to evoke disorienting moods. Gunvor Nelson's Old Digs was made as she contemplated returning to her native Sweden. Her sensuous, layered films often evoke memories of her childhood in Sweden and some, such as this one, explore a longing for that culture. A river in her hometown Kristinehamn and its reflection suggest a melancholy meditation on loss and possibility. Stan Brakhage's Autumnal is a haunting, nostalgic mixture of hand-painted frames and vibrant color fields. Ken Jacobs is the master of a modern-day cinema of surprise, a cinema which is visual and visceral, and which delights with its wondrous abstractions. Jacobs's Disorient Express reworks early train footage to create a delirious, destabilizing viewing experience in which images multiply and mirror each other. The literal journey expands into impossible points of view.-Kathy Geritz
