Dollar
Three society couples, all smitten with each other's spouses, take a group vacation ata ski resort, where a blizzard traps them in their imagined amours.Once again it is interesting to see Bergman cast somewhat against typeas an egocentric actress basking in the kind of fame that, by 1938, wasBergman's as well; the requisite transformation from manipulator tomother-figure comes thankfully late. If one can imagine the 1931Private Lives without Noel Coward or The Women without Cukor, likeSwedenhielms this Hollywoodesque comedy shows, among other things, howfar from Hollywood the Swedish sensibility was. As if to underscore thepoint, Dollar, aptly named, brings in a millionairess American cousinwho strong-arms the group with her pseudo-psychological pretenses beforebeing gleefully cut down to size. She's Gilbert and Sullivan's Katisharecast, Swedish style, as an Ugly American.
