Donka: X-Ray of an African Hospital 2:00
Belgian documentarian Thierry Michel took his watchful camera and a vast reservoir of empathy to Donka, a poverty-stricken public hospital on the outskirts of Guinea's capital, Conakry. Michel patiently explored this institution, from the emergency room to the pediatrics unit to the accounting department, and captured human tragedy at every turn. In revealing the state of basic services in West Africa, Donka also illuminates the dedication of the few who struggle against the darkness, and the cruelty implicit in a society where health care is available only for those who can afford it. With short: Itsembatsemba: Rwanda One Genocide Later (Alexis Cordesse, Eyal Sivan, France, 1996): This chilling portrait of the 1994 "ethnic cleansing" in Rwanda marries incendiary and bloodthirsty radio broadcasts from the period to haunting photographs taken two years later of the stunned Tutsis.
