Down with Poverty (Abbasso la miseria!)
"Like Abbasso la richezza (Down with Wealth, PFA 12/14) which followed it in early 1947, (this) was a fairly robust comedy using for its raw material the antics of the black marketeers and new rich who were so prominent in Italian life at the time. Both films...have a considerable measure of honesty, score some shrewd hits, and have a lively rhythm." (Vernon Jarratt, The Italian Cinema) Magnani plays the disgruntled wife of a truck driver who wants to be corrupt-on his runs, he dabbles in the black market-but whose big heart and modest aspirations thwart his worse nature. He brings home to his wife another mouth to feed in the person of an orphan boy he has found on the streets.
