Dracula
“Misunderstood and misrepresented by most reviewers, John Badham's remarkable and audacious film never had the commercial success it deserved. In terms of a contemporary re-thinking of the Dracula myth, it bears a highly suggestive relationship both to Stoker's novel and to Murnau's film. Influenced by current attitudes to sexuality and the position of women, Badham places the relationship between Dracula and Lucy firmly in the tradition of l'amour fou. If the film cannot ultimately reconcile its inherent contradictions, it nonetheless joins the ranks of the great American romantic melodramas, and Kate Nelligan is as always amazing.” --Robin Wood
