Drama of Jealousy

Monica Vitti turns her Antonioni-honed angst to parodic purposes in this antic avant-farce that mocks both romantic melodrama and fashionable Marxism. Vitti plays one point of an irregular triangle with feckless leftist bricklayer Marcello Mastroianni and sullen pizza maker Giancarlo Giannini; their tormented relationships play out against a backdrop of political protests, rubble piles, plastic-trash-strewn beaches, and modern wastelands to make Antonioni jealous. With a convoluted structure and a script spiked with intentional clichés and Brechtian interruptions-the actors periodically address the camera to contradict the hyperbolic pronouncements of the offscreen narrator-Drama of Jealousy doesn't just satirize narrative excess, but celebrates it.
