The Dreamers

Bertolucci's most recent feature initially gained notoriety for being saddled with an NC-17 rating upon its 2004 American release. The controversy now seems overblown: although unashamed of sexuality, The Dreamers does not provoke in the manner of Last Tango in Paris. Rather, the film celebrates late sixties youth culture-and in particular the cinephilia and sex that were so intertwined with it. Although set during the May 1968 riots that seized the streets of Paris, The Dreamers unfolds primarily inside a vast apartment, where a young American, Matthew (Michael Pitt), forges an intense bond with the beautiful “identical” twins Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green and Louis Garrel), who share a great deal more than genetics. The trio's relationship grows ever more complicated as they reenact film scenes, debate politics, and explore their sexuality. Meanwhile, the rumbling of the street grows louder-making it inevitable that the walls the three have erected around them will soon come crashing down.
