To Each His Own

Another film with strong psychological undercurrents, To Each His Own features Olivia de Havilland as a woman who is separated from her illegitimate baby and then rediscovers him as an adult, flying planes in World War II London. The original New York Times review notes the film's “screen play which artfully dodges complete morbidity. Mitchell Leisen has directed the cast skillfully and his fastidious eye for detail is evident in the carefully appointed sets which reflect the various moods and circumstances of the characters.” Ian Christie writes for London's National Film Theatre: “Initially unimpressed by Brackett's script...Leisen helped Olivia de Havilland win an Academy Award for her tour de force.... He also fought with the studio to have John Lund play both lover and son. As a result, ‘the film revealingly suggests the degree to which an American woman's feelings for son and lover are identical' (Molly Haskell).”
