The Elders
In the mid-1980s, a dozen elderly people in Laolazi village, in Rikaze, Tibet, voluntarily organized the reconstruction of the Gyang Temple, a local Buddhist monastery which was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. After ten years, with the temple work complete, the elders were finally able to carry out their proper duty-reciting Mani and helping the ill and elderly to prepare for death and rebirth. This video presents a remarkable and rare view of Tibetan contemporary village life, documenting the fascinating social negotiations around the revitalization of traditional religious practices in the post-Mao era.
