Cannes prize-winner Eternity and a Day is in many ways the most emotional of Theo Angelopoulos's films. He once again uses the basic structure of the journey to spin out his seductive and melancholy tale. A fatally ill writer spends his last days revisiting familiar places, but this spatial odyssey is also a voyage in time as Alexander (Bruno Ganz) remembers things past. The contrast that Angelopoulos sketches between the rainy and snowy present and radiant days on a long-ago beach creates a poignant meditation on the passing of time.
