Euskadi (Pays Basque/Basque Country)

Euskadi is a new film by Otar Ioseliani, the Soviet Georgian director of When the Leaves Fall, A Singing Blackbird and Pastorale. Produced in France, where Ioseliani now lives and works, Euskadi is set in a Basque village. What dialogue there is, is in Basque. Although the film is without English subtitles, Ioseliani is a director whose wit and artistic vision are largely visual; Pastorale remained a favorite among PFA audiences for years in an unsubtitled print. Ioseliani writes: “During our voyage to the Basque Country, we attended the Festival of God of Helette (Dieu de Helette) and the presentation of the Pastorale by the inhabitants of Pagolle. This film is a sign of respect toward the Basque shepherds and peasants, toward honest men, dignified women and tranquil children, toward this proud and courageous people who, throughout its history, defended its independence and succeeded in preserving its originality and its language, the oldest language of Europe.”
