Evdokia
The uncompromising prostitute seems to be a staple of Greek cinema, to judge by the films in this series, but Evdokia was hailed as revolutionary because, of all the films, it truly challenges that most treasured of traditions-keeping women, especially prostitutes, in their place. A wild young prostitute and her soldier-lover are married after a passionate idyll. But the cruelty of their environment, which both have internalized, takes its toll. The woman finds herself struggling against the efforts of her husband to control her, while he battles the repulsion he feels towards her. The most influential film of the Greek new wave, Evdokia is now a classic. The role made Maria Vassiliou, a non-professional actress, into a star, and she appears again in The Traveling Players.
