Everything for Sale

Everything for Sale is Wajda's verypersonal homage to Zbigniew Cybulski, who came to be called the PolishJames Dean-a hero of the "lost generation" and star of most ofthe great Polish films of the late fifties and sixties (includingWajda's Ashes and Diamonds). In 1967 Cybulski was killed in a freakaccident by a train which he was running to catch. Wajda recreates theincident in Everything for Sale, a film about the making of a film whoselead actor has disappeared. Daniel Olbrychski, who takes over the partof the lost star, in fact went on to become the most popular figure inPolish cinema of the next decade. Wajda weaves fiction, biography, andautobiography into this extraordinary work, which constantly reflectsupon on itself in its exploration of the nature of myth and theexigencies of art. Witold Sobocinski's color cinematography capturesboth the harsh landscape of a Polish winter and the artificial decor ofthe world of film heroes. Those who have seen Godard's Passion of 1982will recognize this as Wajda's Passion of 1968.
