Expositus: Films of Michael Brynntrup

German filmmaker Michael Brynntrup's edgy experimental films are as concerned with questions of narrative and sexuality as they are with riddles and games. He studied with German experimental filmmaker and performance artist Birgit Hein at the College of Fine Art in Braunscheweig and shares her concern with breaking taboos, which can be seen particularly in All You Can Eat, which is comprised of pornographic images. Some of his work, including Loverfilm, is drawn from his extensive, exhaustive diaries, and has an encyclopedic approach to statistics and collecting. Others, such as Cain and Abel: A Moral and Sudden and Unexpected, re-examine narrative strategies, and share a fixation with death. And while the specter of AIDS haunts many of his films, so does a delight in being playful.
