Eyes in the Night
Fred Zinnemann's 1942 debut feature was a surprise hit at the recent Berlin Film Festival tribute to Zinnemann, who was born in Vienna and worked in Berlin in the twenties. It is a tingler hinging on the exploits of a blind sleuth (played with unexpected restraint by Edward Arnold) and his seeing-eye dog, Friday. An inventor's peaceful home becomes a nest of evil when his stepdaughter (young Donna Reed) inadvertently makes it a haven for Nazis. Overshadowed by Zinnemann's definitive film noir for MGM, Act of Violence (PFA 8/84), Eyes in the Night is omitted from most genre studies of film noir; our screening of the film tonight in a 35mm studio vault print promises a delightful rediscovery.
