Faits Divers (For Tom Gunning) (1989, ca. 15 mins, Silent, B&W, Super-8)
: "An homage to actuality films from the turn of the century. The title is a French phrase that was used in 19th Century French newspapers as a heading for a section with brief stories of city life. I made this film out of a personal necessity to get back out in the world with my camera and escape the claustrophobia of cut-out animation and my apartment. The film is made up of eight single take shots ranging from thirty seconds to a full roll of film separated by seven intertitles. A number of the shots concentrate on the decaying New York City infrastructure. The film is dedicated to Tom Gunning as a thank you for teaching me about the treasures of early film history and for being my mentor for the last decade. Part of the motivation for this film came from a desire to preserve the present. In a sense I have made this film for what it will look like in ten years." Lewis Klahr
