Family Domains: Short Works
Tonight's program of short works explores the bonds of family across generations. Britta Sjogren's narrative a small Domain (1996, 18 mins, Color, 16mm) is a haunting, almost wordless tale of an older woman whose break from her routine breaks taboos, but also creates a circular link between young and old. Combining songs, reenactments, and the elements of a classic fairy tale, Cecilia Condit spins the story of her mother's escape from the family home in her newest work, Oh, Rapunzel (1996, 35 mins, Color, Video). Her mother, playing herself, encounters herself as a child, demons from the past, and most importantly, learns how to say "No." In Vidiom #1: Lullaby (1992, 1:30 mins, Color/B&W, Video) M. Zaccheo offers a short good-bye to his grandmother. Local videomaker Andy Abrahams Wilson travels regularly to Florida to visit his grandmother. Between trips to her local grocery store, where Bubbeh Lee inevitably returns some produce and neighbors try their hand at matchmaking, Andy and Bubbeh talk about their lives in the humorous and delightful Bubbeh Lee & Me (1996, 35 mins, Color, 16mm). He's gay, she's growing old, and they love and appreciate each other.-Kathy Geritz
