An assassination attempt on a brilliant scientist leaves him in a coma with an inoperable blood clot. A surgical crew embarks on a top-secret life-saving journey in a miniaturized submarine, which is injected into the man's bloodstream and explores the wonders of the human body from the inside. The imaginative spectacle that ensues includes scuba-diving surgeons battling white blood cells, a suspenseful trip through the inner ear, and a venture into the lungs-the film's Oscar for Best Visual Effects was clearly well deserved.
