The Fearmakers

Subversives in the public relations business are the source of intrigue in this little known film directed by Jacques Tourneur (whose film noir, Out of the Past, and horror film, Cat People, are two of the best of their respective genres). Dana Andrews plays a returning Korean War veteran who recovers from Communist brainwashing only to find his business--a Washington D.C. poll-taking firm--in new hands: a group of “peace-at-any-price"niks who want to soften public opinion into complacency. The original Variety review notes that The Fearmakers “deals with a pertinent, little-explored subject of contemporary interest.... (But it is) not helpful to identify the ‘villain' of the piece as a committee opposed to atomic tests without making it clear that not all those against such experiments are dupes or agents of a foreign power.... Direction makes most of the action involved.... Andrews has warmth and charm....”
