Also known as Los Ambiciosos and Republic of Sin, this French-Mexican coproduction features Gérard Philipe in his last screen appearance. The story concerns a nonviolent reformer who “does not realize that his idiotic idealism is the dictatorship's strongest guarantee” (Ado Kyrou). As in many of his Mexican films, Buñuel's uncompromising, radical intelligence is revealed within a format of popular conventions and exoticism. This extremely rare film is available only in a dubbed version.
