Bartas regular Katerina Golubeva takes an enigmatic journey to the snowy landscape of the Savan Mountains. The purpose of her trip is never explained; silent and observant, she encounters a few members of the nomadic Tofolar tribe. Even with two murders, the film is not dramatic. With an ethnographic eye and a patient, fixed camera, the landscape is revealed in hypnotic, breathtaking shots. The sheer beauty and harshness of the region dwarfs all narrative events, whether an old man riding a reindeer, a violent fight, or a figure fleeing the village. Intense close-ups of faces alternate with stunning long shots, intermittent music mixes with sounds emanating from just beyond the frame, shifting our attention from the impenetrability of humans to the impenetrability of nature.
