Fig Leaves
Fig Leaves appears early in the filmographies of both director Hawks and costume designer Adrian, while their styles and sensibilities were still under development. The domestic comedy, framed by the then-popular Stone Age comparison to modern day, is an excuse to display as many dazzling ensembles as possible. Clearly a satirical treatment of fashion, the eye-catching getups resemble those of Erté's theatrical designs more than they do wearable couture. The designer's atelier appears to have a continual fashion show, a constant parade of models showing off the clothes for an audience or for each other. The character of the designer is given the mannerisms and accoutrements usually reserved to portray a gay stereotype, so his amorous pursuit of the heroine and other women is unconvincing and possibly part of the joke. The character bears striking physical resemblance to Adrian, leading one to wonder who was in on the joke.-Lee Amazonas
