A Film with No Name (Za sada bez dobrog naslova)

In A Film with No Name, Karanovic returns to his world of "documentary fairy tales" by situating his latter-day love story in the milieu of Yugoslavia's most explosive political problem-that of the Muslim-Orthodox, Albanian-Serbian, north-south question currently taking place in Kosovo. Characteristically, it is not a love story in the classical sense or style. A well known film director is trying to shoot a documentary dealing with an unhappy love affair between a Serbian worker and an Albanian girl. But a family feud begins and the worker, Miloljub (brilliantly portrayed by non-professional Cedo Orobabic), is violently mutilated by his lover's brothers, the repercussions escalating into a mass-media focus on the plight of this Yugoslav Romeo and Juliet... Shot on 35mm, 16mm, and video with a young and gifted crew, A Film with No Name is the most challenging film to come out of Yugoslavia this year, both thematically and in terms of form. Karanovic has made a brave new beginning, weaving a delicate emotional web in a medium entirely suited to his needs. Mike Downey, Screen International
