Filmmaker Christoph Janetzko in Person
Christoph Janetzko makes landscape films of a very specific nature: urban and rural, interior and exterior, they are landscapes abstracted from the tensions which resonate between these polarities. Janetzko studied and later taught at the Art School of Braunschweig, West Germany; his films have taken prizes at festivals around the world. Fenster (Window) (1979, 16 mins): A mosaic film with "the division of the screen into six fields already attended to in the camera.... The real landscape simply becomes the experience of landscape, as the boundaries between perception, imagination and creation become indistinct" (C.J.). Change (1981, 30 mins): The compositional structures here are similar to the bipolar compositions of Dutch Baroque landscapes. SN (1984, 15 mins): Interior and exterior life in the country; with manipulation, the footage loses its pastoral character. S1 (1985, 15 mins): A formal description of film's psychology presented in strict montage.
