Films from the Arab Diaspora

My American Grandmother (Aysha Ghazoul, U.S., 2000). "Four years ago when I started working on my film, my intentions were to focus on two aspects of my grandmother's life: first, as a single woman performing as a showgirl in the 1930s and '40s, and second, as an American woman married to an Iraqi pilot and living in the Middle East," says filmmaker Aysha Ghazoul. Awarded an honorable mention at the 38th Ann Arbor Film Festival, this personal documentary explores the relationship between an Iraqi filmmaker and her Texan grandmother. It examines the conflict created by cultural and political differences, and focuses on the challenges in making a film about a close relative.
