Films by Stan Brakhage
While many filmmakers are concerned with questions of representation and the filmic process, Stan Brakhage is singular in his concern with these issues in regard to the act of perception. Questioning conventional (and conventionalized) "seeing," his meticulously constructed films are an invitation to see more, differently. Brakhage expands the boundaries of film technique-using a hand-held camera, distorting lenses, superimposition, as well as scratching, painting and collaging the film surface. The resulting films, which he refers to as "documentaries," explore the visual-vision and visions, images and image-making, natural light and projected light-and document not only what he has seen but how. Kathy Geritz Wonder Ring (1955, 6 min, Color, Silent), The Dead (1960, 11 min, Color, Silent), Mothlight (1963, 4 min, Color, Silent), Western History (1971, 8 min, Color, Silent), The Riddle of Lumen (1972, 17 min, Color, Silent), Wold Shadow (1972, 2.5 min, Color, Silent), The Process (1972, 13.5 min, Color, Silent), Dominion (1974, 4 min, Color, Silent), RR (1981, 8 min, Color, Silent).
