The Films of Stan Brakhage
A program to celebrate the completion of the cataloging of PFA's avant-garde film collection of over 200 titles. This project was accomplished with support from the National Center for Film and Video Preservation as part of the development of the National Moving Image Database. The PFA film collection is available for research screenings for a nominal fee through the PFA Library and Study Center. Program notes for the Brakhage films written by students in Marilyn Fabe's Avant-Garde Film Course at UC Berkeley will be available on the evening of the program. The following are by Stan Brakhage himself. Arabic 7 (1981, 7 mins, Silent): (E)ach Arabic is formed by the intrinsic grammar of the most inner (perhaps pre-natal) structure of thought itself. Sirius Remembered (1959, 12 mins, Silent): I was coming to terms with decay of a dead thing and the decay of the memories of a loved being that had died and it was undermining all abstract concepts of death. Sexual Meditations (1972, 27 mins, Silent). Fire of Waters (1965, 10 mins, B&W): Inspired by a statement in a letter from poet Robert Kelly: "The truth of the matter is this: that man lives in a fire of waters and will live eternally in the first taste"-this film is a play of light and sounds upon that theme. Nightmare Series (1978, 20 mins, Silent): Four films so related to each other as to be an equivalent to that frightful dreaming which makes Wake of the following day, so that it be spent mourning the events of the night. --Canyon Cinema Catalog
