First a Girl

British musical star Jessie Matthews has the role of “Victor” and “Victoria” in this splendid, stylish comedy of sexual confusion. (It is actually the second version of the story, the first being German director Reinhold Schunzel's Viktor und Viktoria; and the third, of course, is the recent Blake Edwards film with Julie Andrews.) Matthews is first Elizabeth, a messenger girl. When she offers to take the place of sick friend Sonnie Hale at his job, she finds herself in the male role of a female impersonator on the vaudeville stage. As Victor, Elizabeth has London at her feet, so Victor she stays...until he/she falls in love with a man. The overt homosexuality of the recent version being absent in this, First a Girl was pronounced “harmless for adults” by a 1935 Harrison's Reports. Directed by Victor Saville, who directed Matthews in her most famous film, Evergreen, and in It's Love Again, First a Girl is highlighted by original songs and magnificent production numbers, including a lavish bird-cage finale.
