Flamenco at 5:15 Sevillanas

Flamenco at 5:15 (Cynthia Scott, Canada, 1983). An exciting performance film, and a revealing document of an aspect of Hispanic culture, this Academy Award-winning film follows Susana and Antonio Robledo as they introduce the senior students at the famed National Ballet School of Canada to flamenco-dance that grew out of the pain of itinerant gypsies, the songs of the Sephardim, and the Moorish presence in Spain. Sevillanas (Carlos Saura, Spain, 1992). Saura haunts rehearsal studios, private gatherings, and dance society meetings to capture the dance and music forms previously explored in his flamenco trilogy Blood Wedding, Carmen, and El Amor Brujo. Legendary performers and amateur enthusiasts appear side by side, the palpable bond among them being their joy and dedication to an art form at once rigorous and liberating, erotic and spiritual, masculine and feminine. (The film is memorable for its celebration of mature female dancers.)-Alicia Springer, SFIFF '93 Photographed by José Juis Alcaine. (55 mins)
