Flight from Glory
A tense story set in the Andes, where a group of flyers risk their lives daily making supply runs for a mining company. All have lost their licenses in the States and are attracted to the hazards of mountain aviation (with obsolete planes and equipment, to boot) for a complexity of reasons. When a new pilot (Van Heflin) arrives with his bride (Whitney Bourne), the all-male group is thrown for a loop.
“While RKO ‘B's were frequently elaborate, when the decision was made to save money, the economy really showed. Flight from Glory is one, alas, where the purse-strings were quite tight and much of the big (and expensive) action is talked about rather than shown. But RKO clearly didn't know what an interesting little property they had here, and when it turned out so well they probably regretted not having been a little more generous with the budget. Academically, however, it is fascinating, ‘B' budget or not. Although preceded by John Ford's similar Air Mail, this one is clearly a direct ancestor of Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings, with Chester Morris, Whitney Bourne and Van Heflin in roles directly parallel to those played by Grant, Hayworth and Barthelmess.” William K. Everson
