The Flirtation of Girls

An all-star adaptation of the Franco-Arabe revue-an Egyptianized version of French boulevard theater-The Flirtation of Girls is a lighthearted comedy about a frivolous rich girl falling in and out of love with dizzying speed. An old teacher hired to help her pass her exams falls prey to her charms, but must step aside in favor of a younger man. The old generation making way for the new is a theme reiterated in the cast-the film was Naguib al-Rihani's swansong, as the professor, while in cameos and supporting roles, legendary performers (including Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab) meet those destined to command the screen in the fifties. Layla Murad, as the girl, was a Jewish singer who converted to Islam when she married Anwar Wagdi, the director who also plays the love interest in this film. Apart from being among the best Egyptian musicals ever produced, The Flirtation of Girls was a fascinating snapshot of the past, present, and future of the Egyptian cinema.
