Forbidden Planet

In the screen's most unlikely-and probably still its greatest-version of Shakespeare's Tempest, the blissful existence of a father (Walter Pidgeon) and daughter (Anne Francis), living in isolation with their faithful servant Robby the Robot on the planet Altair 4, is interrupted by the arrival of a search party (led by Leslie Nielsen). The presence of these male earthlings unleashes the submerged wrath of the father, whose "id-beast" threatens to destroy them all. In this Freudian fable, the real forbidden planet is the realm of the subconscious. The stunning widescreen color cinematography, inventive set design, and memorably odd electronic soundtrack are a match for the script's ambitions.
