Four Films by New Zealand Women Independents
A Girl's Own Story (by Jane Campion, 1983, 27 mins), a story of adolescent awakening, set in the sixties, evoking the strength of teenage feeling, the strangeness and strength of family, the aloneness of adulthood; Irene 59 (by Shereen Maloney, 1983, 11 mins, Color), a film study of the filmmaker's mother as she explores her own world at a time of enormous personal change; Doc (by Shereen Maloney, 1985, 18 mins, Color), the filmmaker's father, once proud, dominating, now trying to be independent after a crippling stroke; Hooks and Feelers (by Melanie Read, 1984, 50 mins, Color), a dramatic short about a mother who must live with the guilt of having injured her son, based on a story by Keri Hulme.
