Fraggi Deprived of Happiness (or: He Who Is Shorn of All Happiness) (Fraggi-Razluchenny so Schastiyem)

Fraggi is the literary pseudonym of Makhtumkuli, an eighteenth century Turkmenian poet and philosopher. At a time when Turkmenian tribes waged an uncoordinated war against foreign invaders, exhibiting more treachery and distrust toward one another than toward the enemy, Fraggi wrote poems about injustice and freedom. Fraggi Deprived of Happiness, based on K. Kulijev's novel Makhtumkuli, tells of the poet's youth, his maturity as an artist, and the tragedies which, as the title suggests, haunted his adult life.
