France/tour/détour/deux/enfants and Forum
Four thirty-minute tapes (numbers nine through twelve of twelve). For program notes, please see February 16, 2:00. Forum: Fond de la télévision: Implications of the Godard Tapes for American Independent Television Producers Sponsored by Film Arts Foundation. Moderator: Lawrence Daressa (director, California Newsreel). Panelists: Jon Jost (filmmaker), and James Roy MacBean (film critic and author). Godard's intervention in television during the 1970s has implications for television producers which are potentially as radical as his cinematic innovations of the sixties were for filmmakers. In particular these tapes can be seen as a challenge to conventional documentary in pioneering a non-fiction television which does not accept the fiction implicit in television. This forum will give Bay Area documentarians, as well as observers of television, an opportunity to discuss how the Godard tapes can suggest new directions for American independents' work, and how to extend the language of American television and its viewers.
