France/tour/détour/deux/enfants (France/Tour/Detour/Two/Children)

Please note: France/tour/détour... continues February 18 and 23 for a total of twelve 30-minute tapes. "Acknowledging that television viewing has replaced reading as the main source of information for children, Godard and Miéville loosely based their second television series on the primer, The Tour of France by Two Children. Following the traditional tv format, each segment is structured similarly, runs thirty minutes in length, and features the same cast (two French school children). However, the similarity to conventional tv series ends here, as Godard and Miéville detour with Camille and Arnaud into an exploration of communication and understanding in 20th Century France. Each segment begins with an everyday activity of the children, followed by one of the children being interviewed by an off-screen Godard and then a story based on the child's responses, and comments by two adults on the program. It is a structure which encourages us to explore the familiar anew."
