The Franchise Affair
“Based on a novel by Josephine Tey (author of the story from which Hitchcock's Young and Innocent was adapted), The Franchise Affair is almost the definitive cozy, civilized English mystery. Did two apparently docile ladies kidnap and abuse a teenage girl, or was it all an elaborate plot against them--and if so, why? All told via dialogue and characterization, but in such a satisfying way that the lack of physical excitement hardly matters. Michael Denison and Dulcie Gray, a married acting team, became something of a low-key English equivalent of the Lunts, appearing initially in many films together and in recent years a fixture on the London stage in revivals of classics by Sheridan, Molière and Wilde.” William K.
