For Fun

No previous knowledge of Peking Opera is needed to enjoy For Fun, just a normally functioning sense of humor. Old Han (played by the matchless Huang Zongluo), doorman at the Peking Opera Theater, has reached retirement age. His stage-door role gave him certain powers and responsibilities and made him just a touch self-important-which makes it tough for him to adjust to life without work. A chance encounter with a group of old men singing Peking Opera in a park triggers the idea of forming an amateur opera troupe and competing in a talent contest. It isn't long before conflicts arise, bringing Old Han's endemic bossiness to the fore. Beautifully observed, and splendidly acted by a mostly nonprofessional cast, the film radiates a kind of comic warmth not seen in the cinema since the Prague Spring heyday of Milos Forman and Ivan Passer.-Tony Rayns, Toronto Festival
